0DTE Options: What Same-Day Expiration Actually Does to the Tape

TraderDaddy8 min readJul 28, 2026

0DTE options — contracts expiring the same day they are traded — now account for a majority of total SPX options volume on many sessions. What started as a Friday-afternoon curiosity became a daily market, and it has changed how the underlying index actually moves during the day.

Most of what gets written about 0DTE focuses on the payout math. The more useful angle is structural: same-day expiration concentrates an enormous amount of gamma at a handful of strikes, and dealer hedging against that gamma is a real force on intraday price.

Why Gamma Goes Vertical on Expiration Day

Gamma measures how fast an option's delta changes as the underlying moves. Far from expiration, delta shifts gradually. On expiration day, an at-the-money option's delta can swing from 0.30 to 0.70 on a move of a few points, because the contract is about to resolve to either 0 or 1.

Dealers who sold those contracts have to hedge continuously. When they are net short gamma, they buy the underlying as it rises and sell as it falls, which amplifies the move. When they are net long gamma, they do the opposite and dampen it. Because 0DTE volume is so concentrated, the sign of dealer gamma at the current price level tells you whether the tape is likely to trend or chop.

This is the practical reason to check gamma exposure before trading same-day contracts. A session where price sits above the gamma flip in heavily positive GEX territory tends to grind and mean-revert. A session below the flip, in negative gamma, is where the fast directional moves happen.

The Decay Curve Is Not Linear

A 0DTE option loses value on a curve that steepens through the day. An at-the-money SPX call bought at 9:45 AM that has not moved by 2:00 PM has lost most of its extrinsic value even though the underlying is flat. By 3:30 PM, an out-of-the-money contract two points away is worth almost nothing regardless of how plausible the move looks.

This produces the defining characteristic of the instrument: being directionally right is not enough. You have to be right quickly. A trade that would have worked beautifully on a 30-day contract can go to zero on a 0DTE while the thesis eventually plays out an hour after expiration.

The flip side is that the leverage is extreme. A $1.20 contract that goes to $4.00 on a 12-point index move is a 233% return in under an hour. That asymmetry is what draws people in, and it is also why position sizing on 0DTE has to assume the contract goes to zero, because a meaningful share of them do.

Buying Versus Selling Same-Day Premium

Buying 0DTE is a bet on speed. You need direction and magnitude inside a few hours. The win rate is typically low and the wins are large, which means the strategy only survives if you size small enough to absorb long losing streaks.

Selling 0DTE — usually as iron condors or credit spreads — inverts that profile. You win most days and collect small credits, and the risk is that one trending session takes back weeks of gains. The defined-risk spread structure caps the damage, which is why almost nobody sells naked same-day premium on an index.

Neither approach has an inherent edge. The edge comes from matching the structure to the environment, and gamma positioning is the cleanest read on that environment. Selling condors into a deeply negative gamma session with a major catalyst pending is the setup that produces the account-ending day people write about.

What Actually Matters Intraday

The gamma flip level. This is the price where aggregate dealer gamma changes sign. Above it, hedging suppresses volatility. Below it, hedging amplifies it. Knowing where that level sits before the open frames the whole session.

Strike concentration. Large open interest at a specific strike acts as a magnet into the afternoon as dealers manage toward expiration. Price pinning near a heavy strike in the last hour is a well-documented pattern, not superstition.

The economic calendar. CPI, FOMC, and jobs data all land in the morning, and same-day contracts price that risk in. Buying premium ahead of a scheduled release means paying for volatility that collapses the moment the number prints, which is IV crush compressed into minutes rather than days. The economic calendar is the cheapest possible check before entering.

Where the flow is going. Same-day contracts leave an obvious footprint in the tape. Large sweeps into short-dated strikes tell you where positioning is building, and TraderDaddy Pro tags short-dated contracts specifically so you can separate 0DTE flow from ordinary swing positioning in the live flow feed.

The Honest Version of the Risk

Internal outcome data on short-dated contracts is consistently the worst cohort in the book. Contracts in the 0 to 3 day range post materially lower win rates than any longer-dated bucket, and that holds across market regimes. The instrument does not care that your read on direction was correct if the move arrives ninety minutes late.

That does not make 0DTE untradeable. It makes it a tool with a narrow use — expressing a high-conviction view on a specific intraday move, with a defined position size you accept losing entirely. Treating it as a general-purpose way to trade the market is how accounts disappear.
